Course Outline
Depending on your area of interest and preference, you can apply for either a coursework-based LLM or a research-based LLM. A coursework-based LLM consists of four courses and a minor dissertation, while a research-based LLM consists of a full dissertation. Both types of LLM require a minimum of one year of full-time study or two years of part-time study.
The coursework based LLM programmes cover a wide range of specialisations, such as Commercial Law, Constitutional and Administrative Law, Criminal Justice, Electronic Law, Environmental Law, Human Rights Law, International Law, Labour Law, Marine and Environmental Law, Marine Law, Private Law, Public Law, Shipping Law, and Tax Law. You can find more information about each specialisation and the courses offered on the UCT Law website.
The research based LLM programmes allow you to pursue an independent and original research project on a topic of your choice, under the supervision of a faculty member. You can choose to focus on Commercial Law, Criminal Justice, Private Law, or Public Law. You can also apply for a general LLM by dissertation, which does not have a specific focus area.
Entry Requirements
To apply for an LLM degree at UCT, you need to meet the admission requirements, which include a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree or equivalent qualification, a minimum academic performance level, and English language proficiency. You also need to submit a research proposal for the research based LLM programmes. You can find more information about the application process and deadlines on the UCT.
